I appreciate and encourage parent involvement so here are the best ways to stay connected within our classroom: you may e-mail me at anytime. I am also available before and after school by phone. Please contact me if you would like to make an appointment to speak with me in person during non-instructional time. I also encourage your child to join in any conference or meetings.
(I will be sending home an Emergency Contact/Student Information Sheet for you to fill out, this will also assist me in contacting you. I appreciate your cooperation in returning this form as quickly as possible.)
I will also be sending home a monthly newsletter to keep you up to date with all of our classroom happenings and events!
General Information:
Our fourth grade class at Hanley International Academy will be working like rock stars all year to meet our goals and show improvement in all subject areas. An emphasis will be placed on ELA and Math. We will be working independently, in groups and teams during our learning explorations. Our classroom is a “family” we respect each other’s thoughts, ideas, and questions.
Class Goals:
By the end of the year students will be able to defend answers through textual support, think independently, and learn to write and communicate effectively. They will also learn the how to cooperate in team situations, become a part of an educational community of learners, and have a greater understanding of the responsibility they have in their own educational successes. Students will also show improvements and measures taken to meet and achieve their personal goals.
Classroom Rules
Course Expectations
· Students come to class on time and prepared.
· Students are responsible for completing absent work and turning it in the next day. I will have an absent folder for students to gather their missed work.
· Students follow all classroom rules and adhere to their written contracts.
· Students are required to bring their planners to class every day.
· Students should expect to earn their grades by trying their absolute best.
· If students are having a difficult time understanding a skill, I expect that they take advantage of any extra learning opportunities I provide.
· Behavioral issues will not be tolerated, we are here to learn!
Discipline Procedures and Consequences
I will be using a behavior management tracking system in the classroom using color cards. Each student starts out on green, meaning they are on task and having a great day. If they receive a verbal warning for being off task, or their behavior, they will flip their card to yellow. If the issue persists, then the student will flip their card to orange and a consequence will be enforced resulting in a loss of some sort of privilege ex. recess time, fun Fridays etc.
I will be marking their behavior daily in their planners using a marker to indicate how their day went. Parents are only required to sign when a student receives a orange or red color indication in their planners. If student receives a green or yellow indication you do not have to sign. The colors will be recorded in their planners daily along with their assignments for parents to monitor at home. If a student receives an orange or red card, the following consequences will be enforced: A phone call home explaining the issue, parent signature, and behavior plan to be filled out by the student and signed by the parent. If the behavior continues a conference will be made to find a solution. Continued behavior issues will result in a conference with the principal and or detention or suspension from school.
Colors:
Green=great day
Yellow=warning may require 10 written sentences if color is consistent
Orange=more than 1 verbal warning, may require 20 written sentences, parent signature in planner, and phone call home.
Red=issue still persists or there was an additional issue, 50 sentences, parent signature in planner, phone call home, and behavior plan.
Grading
The grading system is as follows….
90-100% A
80-89% B
70-79% C
60-69% D
Below 60 F
Class Load Percentages
Students will be graded according to their ability to demonstrate understanding of the material covered in class. These are the percentages on which their final grade is based…
Summative Tests (End of Unit, 30 day tests): 40%
Class work (Daily Independent): 35%
Reports and Projects 20%
Homework: 5%
Final Total: 100%
No Name Assignments
No name assignments will be held in a designated area until you come to claim it. You will lose 5% on each assignment you do not put your name on your assignment. These assignments will only be left in the designated area for 1 week and will then be counted as zeros and discarded.
Homework Policy
You will be given a homework packet once a week.
Homework is important!!! Homework, is important. HOMEWORK IS IMPORTANT! The purpose of homework is to ensure that you apply what you have learned in school. You will be at home; you will have to think about your answers. Homework is not just “extra practice”; homework is giving your mind time to register and pull apart information. (Synthesis) Homework is the time in which you prove to yourself that you can defeat educational challenges. You are homework rock star!!! You can take that information and use it in different ways! (Application).
Homework that should be practiced daily: multiplication/division facts and a minimum of 20 minutes of nightly reading.
Missing Assignments/Absent Make-Up Work
It is important not to miss school if possible. If you must be absent, you will need to make up any “in class assignments” the next day. Your homework packets are due weekly. If you are absent on Friday the due date, you have two options: you can turn in your packet early if you know you will be absent ahead of time, or it will be due the following Monday. Because you are receiving a packet of homework and are given multiple days to complete it, all packets will be accepted 1 school day late. I will no longer accept them if they are turned in later than that. Also, I do not make additional copies of assignments. It is your responsibility to stay organized and keep track of your assignments.
Re-doing Assignments
I do allow opportunities for students to redo an assignment. If you receive an assignment back that been marked as “redo”. It is the responsibility of the student to seek additional help from me or others to try to redo their assignment. I will reward full credit if an assignment was redone correctly. All redo assignments are due the following school day. They will not be accepted any later.
Extra Credit
Throughout the school year, I will optional opportunities to earn extra credit. However, extra credit will only be awarding to students that have rocked all year and really put forth a great effort. I will not allow extra credit opportunities if you have not applied yourself and are relying on extra credit to boast a failing grade. Extra credit will always be awarded for bringing in additional classroom supplies throughout the school year.
Other Policy Information
Turning in Assignments: All assignments are to be turned in only after being checked over and highlighting your name (first and last), and date. If any of the explained is missing from the assignment, this will result in flipping their behavior card and writing sentences.
Friday folders: Will be handed out every Friday filled with all of the student’s completed and graded assignments as well as any newsletters, their weekly progress reports, and any other communication to be relayed.
Planners: Students must bring their planners to class every day. We record our daily assignments in them as well as our color card for that specific day behavior. The purpose of the planner is to keep the student, parent, and teacher connected and informed of our daily practice and skills and behavior. Planners should be used to stay organized and can also be used to transition notes back and forth to me.
If planners are not brought to class, a phone call will be made home for the planner to be brought up to the school.
Rewards: Students will have opportunities to earn a variety of awards throughout the school year based on their individual and team behavior performed throughout the school year.
Weekly Progress Reports: Hanley: I send home an additional biweekly progress report on every student to keep families, and the students informed on their classroom abilities and performance. This is just a quick check mark system. Missing assignments will also be listed on this form. The student and parent need to sign this form. It will be sent home every other Friday.
Having written this syllabus at the beginning of the year, please understand that it is subject to change according to the needs of the classroom and teacher. I will notify parents if any changes are made.
